Learning Arabic is essential if one wants to know the real meanings of the Magnificent Quran. It is different when one recites the Magnificent Quran and knows its meanings than a person who recites it without knowing its meaning. Just because it was not compulsory for you when you were in high school doesn't mean its not compulsory to learn it now.
Remember to begin with the right intention. Which is when gaining knowledge one should only want to gain the pleasure and contentment from Allah s.w.t and also to help us further understand His Deen( way of life). It should not be learnt to gain any worldly benefits such as praises or other things.
